A Final Little Fantasy:
No joke, just my own personal love letter to my favorite video game franchise.
I’ve been playing a lot of Persona 5 lately, and next to my copy of Persona 5 is a copy of Final Fantasy XV (which I have yet to touch)… So that was part of my reason for making todays strip.
The other big reason for making a strip dedicated to the Final Fantasy series is the lack of a new main title Final Fantasy game. For almost 10 years we waited for Final Fantasy XIII versus which just turned out to be Final Fantasy XV… When that original announcement was made I remember not being all that impressed. Don’t get me wrong XV is way better than XIII, but the fact that it was hastily transformed into a main line Final Fantasy game only made me concerned where the franchise is actually headed. I remember looking forward to seeing the next big Final Fantasy game, and I kept an eye on E3 this year in the hopes of hearing a Final Fantasy XVI announcement or even a concept art announced… but none to be made. Even the hyped up Final Fantasy VII remake (which by the way ten years to make XV imagine the wait on VII remake) isn’t nearly as exciting as hearing about a new main line Final Fantasy title.
The hopes of a new main line title seems pretty distant right now, I mean Final Fantasy XV wasn’t even completed upon its release, hell technically the true vision of XIII wasn’t even accomplished. A series I remember being excited to jump into after a long rough day of school is literally going nowhere. I mean don’t get me wrong I’m excited the new Dissidia game is coming to consoles (remember when I made that strip for that game literally two years ago?), and the Kingdom Hearts III game trailer was pretty dope, but call me selfish for wanting to look forward to a new adventure to my favorite video game franchise.
A lot of my life (as embarrassing and stupid as this is going to sound) is based on lessons I learned from Final Fantasy (and other games in general). When I was facing identity issues about being half asian and not really knowing what kind of a person I am, I had Final Fantasy VI and Terra’s struggle with who she was (still my favorite video game character and game). When I became a teen I felt some of the same struggles Squall had with society. When I was becoming more of an adult Final Fantasy X taught me that the things I have been brought up to believe in can also hold dark secrets and deceit. It’s the only game series I can feel comfortable having my next of kin playing because I know there’s lessons to be learned (not to say other games can’t do the same).
So Square, take the time, and hopefully a new Fantasy can come to light. Please don’t let the Fantasy die.
