Great Power Isn’t Given:

Lately I’ve noticed something about Japanese Super Heroes compared to the American alternative. When you watch something like One Punch Man, Boku No Hero Akademia, and even (as much as I hat to admit it) Dragonball Z there’s an emphasize on honing your powers. The only superhero I can think of off the top of my head that comes close to that is Captain America and Daredevil. In American comics it almost always seems like the powers are just given to the character without any means of earning them. Superman and Ironman would be the obvious example of heroes who were just given their powers without any real form of earning them. I bring this up because I want to talk about an anime series I really think might be one of the best damn series I’ve seen in a long time and has skyrocketed into my top five favorite anime series.

vlcsnap-2016-07-09-01h44m01s867

Boku No Hero Akademia is a true anime gem in my opinion. There’s so much potential in this series to possibly not only be a Naruto replacement, but even surpass the series. Much like One Punch Man this is another action anime series I can highly recommend to a non anime watching person. It mixes in both Japanese and American depictions of heroic story, but still kind of keeps things fresh and strong. You can guess how I feel about this series just based on this paragraph, but let me tell you why you should watch it.

vlcsnap-2016-07-09-01h45m09s792

The story of this anime is that the world has been introduced to superpowers, it awakens in normal human beings which they call quirks. A quirk can range from any  form of supernatural powers from super speed, flying, and mixed DNA. The minority in this world are the people who have no quirk which appears to be extremely rare. Itsuki Midoriya is one of those rare oddities without a quirk, but wants to become a hero regardless much like his idol All Might. One day when Midoriya is having strong doubts about being a hero he finds himself being rescued by none other than All Might. Finally being able to meet his idol in person he decides to ask if he could ever be a hero himself and receives a harsh reality check as he’s told no.

vlcsnap-2016-07-09-01h41m15s107

What I appreciate most about this series is the main character Itsuki Midoriya. When you watch that first episode you really have no faith in Itsuki to be any kind of a heroic figure. He’s a fairly weak kid, extremely skittish, and unsociable. Despite those weakness he still has a strong desire to stand and do what he believes to be right, and when you think about it that’s the thing all heroes must have. Itsuki works his butt off to earn the powers he’s given and even when he’s given that power he still has to learn to control in properly. I think a character who works for his powers is far more impressive than a hero who is just given a hand me down power like most American heroes.

vlcsnap-2016-07-09-01h45m19s535

Now if I have one complaint about this series is that it falls in the anime troupe of high school dedicated to a certain group (Soul Eater, Blue Exorcist, etc.). It isn’t a super huge problem, but it might scare some people off, but don’t fret it is good. I think the best comparison I can describe the setting is the movie “Sky High” if it was done correctly. Unlike that movie (that could have had potential in my opinion) Boku No Hero doesn’t have stupid cliques and the students (with the exception of one) have a level of respect for one another as they’re all equals and acknowledge each others respected quirks. The highest point in this series are the characters in my opinion, and the series makes you wonder about how characters quirks work as some are never revealed by the end of the series.

vlcsnap-2016-07-09-01h45m45s743

The series has a well balanced level of action, comedy, and drama that appreciate. I think the balance of these elements are well in each episode, and when the drama hits, it hits hard. I think the first two episodes alone nearly had me in tears for Itsuki just watching his struggle with accepting his fate of possibly never achieving his dream. The action is astounding as to be expected by the animation of Trigger (Kill La Kill, Little Witch Academia, etc.). The action is over the top and beautiful to watch. Every time All Might makes a punch it is the most epic scene ever about the same levels of awesome as Saitama from “One Punch Man.”

vlcsnap-2016-07-09-01h42m59s652

The world of Boku No Hero Akademia plays huge respect to the super hero genre, both for the Japanese heroes and American. All Might representing the stereotypical American superhero, Atsui a possible Spiderman reference, and Ida possibly Flash/Quicksilver. With so many interesting characters and unanswered quirks it’s no surprise that the second season is one of the most anticipated seasons of 2017, and I look forward to watching it myself.

vlcsnap-2016-07-09-01h42m27s032

I really have no negative thing to say about this series, and I highly suggest you watch the first two episodes. If you’re not hooked after the first two episodes like I was then I can give you credit for at least trying it, but I honestly think it’s worth the watch.

10/10: Masterpiece!

Final Thoughts: “With the large wave pools of American Super hero movies coming out it’s nice to see an anime that shows the importance of why we love Super Heroes in the first place.”

Offline Beat:

I finally get to reuse Scotts Final Fantasy XIV avatar again, after two years. I never played along side guilds in MMORPGs, call me anti-social, but being obligated to work with others in a game I’m only playing casually never really interested me. I also knew about offline meet-ups and I wouldn’t want to meet up with people I would most likely be yelling at on a regular basis, although chances are they would be yelling at me for not stepping up to the plate.

On a side not I’ve been watching another new anime series called Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nai to Omotta (yeah another Japanese anime with a long stupid title). So far it’s alright, it’s based on a light novel with an MMORPG story line. I have some problems with it, but I can’t officially say much unless I finish the entire series first. If you’re interested in an anime about a girl who can’t distinguish reality from fantasy you can check it out on Crunchy Roll.

So far my biggest beef is that this is another story about a female otaku character who is way too hot to be having social issues, why can’t they make a female protagonist that doesn’t look like a super model like Watamote did?

I really hate birds… I’ve been coming across these little pricks crapping on my car lately.

On a side note I’ve been checking out a new anime series called Bakuon!! (no review yet as the series is still running, maybe later). So far I’ve liked what it has to offer. It’s humorous and even though I don’t know a whole lot about motorcycles it’s still entertaining. I appreciate the “Rebel Without a Cause” reference just thrown into the show. If you want a pretty decent comedy you should check it out as it’s pretty fun so far. Onsa is best girl!

I’m only on episode 8 but I’m planning to finish this series.

Extreme Beach 3

Extreme Beach 3:

As you may have learned from my Dan’s Top 10 Favorite Video Games/Franchises special I did last year you may know I’m a fan of Dead or Alive especially the fifth installment of the fighting series. I also enjoy the Extreme Beach Volley Ball games as well. When it was announced that there would be no U.S. release of the volleyball game I was a little disappointed as I genuinely enjoy the game for the mini games and (well duh) volleyball game play. It was recently announced that a free to play version of Extreme 3 was released, but once again Konami is afraid to release it to the U.S. due to Social Justice Warriors/Feminist (I actually forget which ones they’re actually avoiding issues with). I did some sneaking around the system and got a hold of a free to play copy of Extreme 3, but is it really worth all of the attention it’s getting?

DEAD OR ALIVE Xtreme 3 Fortune Free-to-Play Version_20160530135838

If you have not played any of the previous two Extreme games here’s a simple explanation. You pick one of the various female fighters from Dead or Alive, get a partner, play volleyball, and leave. Pretty simple, but for whatever reason a little addicting. You can of course dress up your character in a variety of swim wears, some being a cute and others that can be a little distasteful (I absolutely hate the Venus outfit). You can partake in some mini games like pool hopping, butt battle, racing, and tug of war. If you really want to you can just sit back and just watch your character lounge around (honestly why would you?). Now Extreme 3 does carry a lot of these features…but also lacks a lot of what made the other two games had…

DEAD OR ALIVE Xtreme 3 Fortune

Now don’t get me wrong the girls in this game look way better than they did in the previous Extreme games. I really appreciate the new character designs that Dead or Alive 5 went into and I can somewhat believe these characters are real. Physics have been somewhat improved and they don’t bounce around so crazy like they have in the past Extreme games.

My actual game play:

I really enjoy the volleyball game play, it’s easy to master and addicting. The games don’t drag out forever like most traditional volleyball games so I can play against multiple opponents in less than just an hour.

DEAD OR ALIVE Xtreme 3 Fortune

As much as it seems I’m praising this game I actually have a lot I want to complain about. In Dead or Alive 5 one of the coolest features added into the game was that your characters would sweat and get dirty after fighting, but in Extreme 3 the only natural thing that seems to take effect on the girls is that they get a slight tan and when you change outfits they’ll actually have tan lines from where their previous outfits left behind. That’s neat and all, but it doesn’t even seem like the characters get wet when in water and the fact that Dead or Alive 5 features these details makes Extreme 3 seem a little disappointing.

DEAD OR ALIVE Xtreme 3 Fortune

I mentioned before that the previous games had fun mini games, while Extreme 3 has some of the previous mini games from previous games they also lack a good majority of them. Extreme 2 had butt battle, pool hopping, wave racing, and water sliding! This game replaced wave racing and water sliding with tug of war, rock climbing, and foot racing… Now I admit I’m playing the free to play version, and I don’t know if the full version has those two games in it. But if the full Extreme 3 doesn’t even contain those two mini-games it’s still a major down grade from previous Extreme games.

DEAD OR ALIVE Xtreme 3 Fortune

My other issue with Extreme 3 is the lack of characters you can play as (I’m playing the free to play version so I only have Kasumi). Dead or Alive has a variety of female characters and a large roster after Dead or Alive 5. I know that the characters in this game is based on popular vote, but I really like Mila, Lei Fang, Lisa, and Tina. Why not just include all of the girls that make Dead or Alive a great series (I’m just thankful my favorite Kokoro is in the game at least, but come on!).

DEAD OR ALIVE Xtreme 3 Fortune

One of the things I find weird about this game, and it was present in the previous games as well was spectator mode. While in the previous games it didn’t play much of an important role for the player, Extreme 3 makes it necessary to succeed in the game. There’s an owner mode where you just watch the character have fun playing and you take pictures. It plays a key role in progressing in the game this time around. If you don’t play owner mode you miss out on certain items and prizes in the game. I would rather this mode be taken out so that I could enjoy other things like… oh yeah wave racing and water slides!

DEAD OR ALIVE Xtreme 3 Fortune

To sum it up… Extreme 2 is actually better as far as game play. Don’t get me wrong Extreme 3 is still fun at what it does have to offer, but it seems like a downgrade from Extreme 2 in fun, and a downgrade in graphics from Dead or Alive 5. At least you can play this game for free if you’re ok with only being Kasumi, and going through the annoyance I had to go through in order to get this game on my PS4.

7/10: Decent

Final Thoughts: Looks nice, but looking nice doesn’t make it exceptional…

Just Incredible:

Wow how weird would this be? We got Small World in Ant-Man, why not jump the shark entirely? Still looking forward to Civil war movie whenever it comes out though. In the mean time here’s a super awesome anime review which actually works with todays strip sort of:

vlcsnap-2016-01-14-16h06m28s571

It’s probably the most hyped up anime series from the fall season and honestly I’ve been waiting patiently to watch this one. One Punch Man is an amazing epic anime if you haven’t already seen it already. It’s like the strength of Superman mixed in with over the top action from Dragonball Z and a dash of humor you would get One Punch Man.

vlcsnap-2016-01-14-16h07m38s124.png

So the story goes like this: Saitama is a hero who possesses strength that goes beyond the limits of man. He’s absolutely powerful that all of his enemies are defeated with a single punch. One would expect this to be a blessing, but for Saitama it is the ultimate handicap as he can never truly feel the exhilaration of a true fight he desperately wants. He can take down the strongest men, titans, mutated animals, and even the almighty Sea King, but they just can’t fill his deep gap. What makes things more interesting is that there’s clearly something bigger going on around Saitama, but we’re hardly ever shown in detail of the true story happening in the background, but honestly who really cares?

vlcsnap-2016-01-14-16h10m38s459.png

Now the show isn’t just Saitama punching things the end. There are other characters that have unique powers like the cyborg Genis who takes an interest in Saitama’s power and becomes his protege. One Punch Man has an interesting and colorful cast of side characters that are not only funny like an Iron Man parody and a Sailor moon parody, but can also be pretty bad ass. The fights in this series despite mostly being humorous are really action packed. One monster gets into an epic battle with multiple heroes at once and the animation of depth of the battle is just extreme. Even some fights with Saitama are really awesome and over the top as well.

vlcsnap-2016-01-14-16h15m48s915.png

I should mention that One Punch Man is not only action packed, but a satire of the action/super hero genre. Much like another popular hero anime series Tiger & Bunny (which I also love) heroes are looked at like a big endorsement deal. Heroes are ranked by popularity and skills and are paid for it based on their ranks. The series also mocks action animes in general paying nods to series like Dragonball, Naruto, Sailormoon, and even Attack on Titans. You don’t have to know a lot about those series as I think the humor comes off regardless of that knowledge.

vlcsnap-2016-01-14-16h12m53s954.png

If there’s anything negative I can say about One Punch Man it’s this… How come this series couldn’t be longer? It’s a shame that the series is only 12 episodes long, but hopefully we’ll be getting more episodes in the near future as this series is probably one of the best series I’ve seen in a long time. I highly recommend One Punch Man I really don’t think you’d be disappointed.

10/10: Masterpiece

Final Thought: “The action is epic, and it comes from the most plain looking character ever.”
