Life’s Just Beachy Pt 1:
This years Summer special will be throughout the month of August, and this time I’ve planned ahead unlike last years Lifes a Beach Special. Similar to the Christmas special this special is much like a traditional comic book style. I’ll still be posting normal strips Tuesday & Thursdays. Anime reviews will be on Thursdays instead of Saturdays however.
Start on the first page and enjoy:
Originally in the first Summer Special I wanted a more exposition to why everyone went to the beach house originally.
Some fourth wall breaking to acknowledge how much better the summer special this year was than last years.
Now originally Drew & Dan’s conversation was about a video game night that was going to be part of chapter 3 towards the end, but changed it due to time constraint and when I wrote the script really did not fit the theme of the special.
I thought it would be funny to bring back the Patrick is too lazy to take down his Christmas decoration. Also Ophelia, Alice, and David are having a tutoring session that was mentioned in a previous comic strip.
This part with Scott was something I was going to put into a regular strip, but I don’t get as much room for detail in a normal strip.
This part was something I think was made just right.
Originally this was supposed to be the lingerie shop from the Christmas special, but I don’t think lingerie shops even sell swimsuits so I changed it.
You can probably see this, but this page was two strips that were originally supposed to be 4 panel strips for LAST years summer special.
This page was a collection of planned events I had for this special, but most of it was cut due to time.
I thought about just reusing the first panel and just copying and pasting, but I’m not a fan of when other comics do that either.
Coming up with who drove with who took me awhile to come up with. I really didn’t know who should ride with who. I always knew Ophelia and Alma would be in the same car and Dan and Patrick had to be in the same car, but everyone else I had to come up with how it would work and what would happen.
This chapter was originally supposed to contain a goofy racing game parody, but I scrapped it as I didn’t want this Special to be wacky like the Christmas Special was.
This page took me awhile to draw and color. It was hard for me to get all 10 characters in a single page.
The joke about peeing in a bottle is something I always had to worry about whenever I went on long road trips with my family.
I wasn’t sure if I wanted to have Ranko-Chan in this special or not because she isn’t an actual character, but leaving her at home would have been weird to me.
I remember fondly about long road trips with nothing to do. When I was younger and your gameboy or cd players battery died you were s.o.l. and had to converse with everybody.
I did have an argument about the authenticity of these two crackers in a store.
Probably my favorite thing to do when I’m on a long road trip.
I don’t know if I would do this today, but when I was younger. Yes I would.
Q, X, and Z are the biggest pains to find when you play the alphabet game so you bet that the detour was needed.
I knew I wanted a diner scene, but wasn’t a 100% sure on what I wanted to do.
Yes I’m aware I screwed up and said Chris Rock instead of Kid Rock, but it works because I’m always messing up on peoples names in real life.
The redneck conflict was supposed to play a bigger part, but I scrapped it about here as I wanted my characters to hurry up and get to the beach house.
I couldn’t figure out why the middle panel wouldn’t keep the background color in its own area so this whole page just turns pink.
I didn’t want a main character focus in the first chapter, but I wanted to draw some exposition.
I’m glad I was able to get everyone in the cell phone.
I decided to move Jen to the front seat of Davids van to prepare for the next page.
I didn’t want the entire plot of the Summer Special to be focused on Alma’s problems. I also needed other character development.
Originally the focus of this special was supposed to be Alma and David, but later on I added Jen as well which I’ll explain a little later.
I like having Dan and Patrick. They do reflect on what me and the real Patrick were like when we were younger.
I was really glad I was able to redraw the same panel from the first Summer special.
To be continued…
Look forward to the next chapter 08/15/2015
